First Premium gathered that until his sudden death, ACP Popoola was the Officer in Charge of the State Intelligence Department (SID).
A source familiar with the incident disclosed that Popoola suddenly developed breathing difficulties during the meeting and began gasping for air, prompting an emergency response.
“He was immediately rushed to the Police Medical Centre at the Police Headquarters in Abakaliki, where medical personnel attended to him without delay,” the source said.
Despite swift medical intervention, efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, and he was later confirmed dead by doctors.
Preliminary medical reports indicated that the cause of death was cardiac arrest associated with hypertensive heart disease.
Further findings revealed that his remains have been deposited at the morgue of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki.
Confirming the development, the Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, said the officer collapsed unexpectedly during the meeting and was immediately taken to the hospital.
“Yes, one of our officers had a medical emergency during a meeting and was rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, he did not survive,” Ukandu said.
He added that the late ACP was not known to be ill prior to the incident, stressing that he appeared fit enough to attend the meeting.
