President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new Nigerian Army Depot in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State, marking a significant expansion in the country’s military training infrastructure.

The approval was disclosed by the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Waidi Shaibu, during the passing-out parade of the 89 Regular Intake of the Nigerian Army at the Depot Nigerian Army in Zaria, Kaduna State, on Saturday, December 13.

Nigeria to Have Three Army Depots

With the approval of the Abakaliki depot, the number of Nigerian Army depots across the country has increased to three. For decades, only two depots existed, located in Zaria, Kaduna State, and Osogbo, Osun State.

The development is expected to enhance recruitment capacity, improve training efficiency, and strengthen the Nigerian Army’s operational readiness nationwide.

Major General Shaibu’s announcement was further highlighted in a video shared on social media by Dada Olusegun, Special Assistant to President Tinubu. The video confirmed the president’s approval and emphasized the strategic importance of the new depot in the South-East region.

Passing-Out Parade in Kaduna

The Chief of Army Staff made the announcement while addressing newly trained soldiers at the passing-out parade of the 89 Regular Intake. A total of 3,439 recruits completed six months of intensive military training at the Zaria depot.

Major General Shaibu urged the recruits to uphold discipline, loyalty, professionalism, and commitment to national service as they officially joined the Nigerian Army.

Nigerians React

The announcement has sparked reactions from Nigerians on social media, with many commending President Tinubu for expanding military infrastructure and improving national security capacity. Some users described the move as timely and inclusive, while others praised the administration for considering regional balance in military development.

I don’t know what people think restructuring is, but Bola Tinubu is slowly doing it; the bomb will come with the 6th constitutional alteration. If I were Tinubu, I would pay influencers to talk about it every day because all the answers are in there.

Joe Best said this should have been done since 1999:

These are some important decisions Obasanjo ought to have made, but fear of those northerners will not allow him, instead of writing useless letters. God will continue to bless JAGABAN of the universe. I'm so PROUD of You.
