“My Father Was Not Fit to Be Called a Father”
According to Kemi Olunloyo, her relationship with her father was marked by trauma, emotional distance, and unresolved pain.
She recounted a disturbing incident from 1978 when she was allegedly sexually assaulted during a riot. She claimed that her father fled the scene instead of protecting her, leaving her severely injured and traumatized.
“He watched me being sexually assaulted and fled while I was bleeding, losing the use of one eye and becoming deaf in one ear,” she said.
She further alleged that her father later denied her account publicly, accusing her of lying in order to protect his political image.
A History of Emotional Distance
Kemi also revealed that her parents did not attend any of her three graduation ceremonies in the United States, despite her academic achievements.
She noted that she was the only child who did not attend her father’s inauguration in October 1983, explaining that he refused to allow her to return home briefly after she began pharmacy school in August of that year.
Her absence from his burial, she said, was a continuation of a long-standing emotional separation.
Claims of Career Sabotage and Estrangement
Beyond personal trauma, Kemi alleged that her father discouraged successive governors from offering her employment opportunities in Oyo State, leaving her frustrated and marginalized despite being the daughter of a former governor.
She recalled seeing him for the last time in February 2018 during her aunt’s funeral, before leaving Ibadan permanently in July 2019.
Despite his attempts to reconnect later, she said she chose not to return.
“A Painful Chapter Has Closed”
In her statement, Kemi described her father’s death as a moment of emotional closure, saying it ended years of manipulation and psychological distress.
“It is a huge relief that my dad passed on. He can never manipulate and destroy our lives anymore,” she stated.
She added that she remains the only member of her family who speaks publicly about their experiences, emphasizing that her decision to stay away from Nigeria was part of her journey toward personal freedom and healing.
