OYSIEC Announces New Date for Oyo State Local Government Elections.

 The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has officially announced Tuesday, December 29, 2026, as the new date for the conduct of local government council elections across the state.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Chairman of the Commission, Babatunde Afees Adeniyi, and made available to journalists in Ibadan.

Reason for the Change

According to the statement dated March 4, 2026, the rescheduling became necessary following a revision of the national electoral timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

INEC recently moved the Presidential and National Assembly elections from February 20, 2027, to January 16, 2027. The new national election date clashes with the previously scheduled Oyo State local government elections, which were also set to hold on January 16, 2027.

To avoid logistical and operational conflicts, OYSIEC resolved to adjust the timetable.

New Election Schedule

With the revision, the local government elections will now take place:

Date: Tuesday, December 29, 2026

Time: 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Location: All local government areas across Oyo State

The commission stated that the adjustment will help ensure effective coordination of election logistics, security arrangements, and voter participation.

Official Statement from OYSIEC

In the statement, the commission explained that the decision followed consultations with relevant stakeholders.

“The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission hereby informs political parties, security agencies, stakeholders, and the general public that the Local Government Election earlier scheduled for Saturday, January 16, 2027, has been rescheduled to Tuesday, December 29, 2026, between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM.”

The commission noted that the change was necessary to prevent operational congestion, ensure optimal security deployment, protect voter participation, and maintain the integrity of the electoral process.

Campaign Deadline and Possible Re-run

OYSIEC also outlined additional key dates in the revised timetable:

End of Election Campaign: 12:00 midnight on Monday, December 28, 2026

Possible Re-run Election: Tuesday, January 5, 2027 (if required)

Dr. Adeniyi urged political parties, security agencies, and other stakeholders to continue their preparations in line with the updated schedule.
